May 21, 2010 - Wednesday, May 19, we visited the Verbeke Foundation. Our goal was to discuss the opening of the exhibition 'Green Summer' and see if the groundworks meet the needs for the construction of Earthresidence.
The opening of 'Green Summer', part of the exibition is the construction of Earthresidence , is on May 29 at 18 pm at the Verbeke Foundation, Westakker at 9190 Kemzeke (Stekene).
What led to the exhibition? According to Verbeke Foundation: "The disappearance of plant and animal species, the raising of the sea level, the massive deforestation, the ecological footprint, the Kyoto Protocol, the Copenhagen conference, the list is long. Yes, the earth is in danger: the different media channels repeat it daily! With its 12 hectares of nature reserve and 20,000 sqm of indoor spaces the Verbeke Foundation is one of the largest European private initiatives where culture, nature and ecology meet. All this according to the Verbeke Foundation constitutes concrete reason for the next summer exhibition to be devoted to ecology. " A nice place for a first earthship in Belgium.
Visitors to the exhibition can have a look in the museum. In addition there are lectures, concerts and performances. In one of the lectures, some members of Earthship Belgium explain the construction of Earthresidence. Other lectures are given by Heath Bunting (UK), Prof. Dr. Huub de Groot (NL), L. Standaert (BE) and Adam Zaretsky (U.S.). Entrance is € 5, - including a free drink.
Then we examined the location. First we measured the distance to see if the size is correct. Then we dug a hole to determine where the groundwater level is. We believe that the hole needs to be slightly wider and the soil should be flatter. Verbeke will take care of it.
