April 14th, 2011 - On the 10th of April Geert Verbeke, Frans De Medts and his wife Marianne, Lucia Vezo and David Verstappen came together on the grounds of the Verbeke Foundation Kemzeke, to consult and inform about the Earthresidence project.
By using plans, Frans De Medts explained which materials were needed at the beginning of the construction and in what manner the works should take place. The earthship will consist of double walls with a layer of Argex-grain insulation in between.
Since Geert Verbeke hasn't received the permission to use car tires for Earthresidence by OVAM, he has decided to use small sandbags for the construction of the supporting walls.
Obviously, sandbags don't perform as well as car tires, but with the necessary insulation of the outside wall, they may still have the necessary accumulation - power. One advantage of using sandbags is that it is easier to built with and therefore the work will probably be finished more quickly. Another advantage could be that OVAM probably will not object using sandbags.

Around, a waterproof layer will be provided so that neither the sandbags nor the Argex will absorb moisture. The roof-construction is an exclusive design of Frans De Medts who will apply his tested rigid connection node.
On the 16th of April, We will start placing the structure of Earthresidence and on the 7th of May we will officially begin with the associated work. All the needed materials will be available.
Naturally, we will count on some enthusiastic volunteers to help make the work run smoothly. There will be an application form for this project soon on our website.
Keep an eye on our website and apply quickly!
See you soon at Kemzeke!
