Permaculture and eartships, a fascinating marriage

E-mail Print

Cat-AlgemeenJune 22th 2008- The principles of permaculture bear a lot resemblance to the principles of eartships.

Both visions are based on appreciation and efficient respondence to natural phenomena. Also clever use and reuse of available raw materials is very important. Therefore it is not surprising that Permaculture Netherlands deals with energy producing houses. The course seems to be almost an introduction to the earthship concept.

Douwe Beerda explains clearly in a concise text how our houses are organised on energy level. He also gives clear calculation examples which convince you not use any more light bulbs. Also the four elements fire (sun), water, air (wind) and earth are discussed to explain some techniques for sustainable building. Unfortunately the very basic principle of earthships isn't mentioned at all: thermal mass. This stored energy can be retained longer.

You can download this course and another fascinating courses on permaculture for free on the site  of Permaculture Netherlands. The site also provides a lot of interesting information for the permaculture enthusiast. According to our opinion the most informative web site about permaculture in Dutch.
