November 3, 2010 - Following a few e-mails, last Sunday we had a meeting with Tom, Falco and Sigfried from Ghent. The meeting took place in Berchem.
These young men want to set up a small ecological selfsustaining community on the island of Crete, based on permaculture. For housing they were considering an earthship. They have budgets and are already well acquainted with Greece.

Crete
in the spring of 2011 they are willing to look for a location. We have advised them to first seek a municipality that is willing to approve an earthship before buying any land. It also seemed wise to build a building (a hut, yurth or something similar) for temporary living. In this way, the landscape and climate can be studied and the permaculture garden can be implemented. A first step towards self sustainable living. All of this could happen in 2011.
Somewhere in the course of 2012 they would start building the earthship. The biggest advantage of this is that they can use the created time for collecting materials to recycle, which contribute to the needed savings in the budget.
Of course there were many questions about Earthships we gladly answered. All in all a pleasant and inspiring afternoon.
We wish Tom, Falco and Sigfried success with their excellent initiative towards a better world. We will do our best to provide the 3 friends with the best possible support.
