September 22, 2010 - Yesterday we visited Kristof of the Youth Service Hoboken. Tile (vzw De Scheld'apen) was also present.
We talked about the project in Hoboken. Previously we have reported that the project has got the principle approval of the College of Antwerp.
Meanwhile there is a lot more clarity. The service for building permits from the city of Antwerp has been informed and they are not negative towards the earthship and the project. In fact, they ask for drawings of the earthship to schedule the project within their plans around Fort Hoboken.
Kristof also came with the good news that the budget has been approved. He is working to establish contacts with some companies for the sponsorship of the drum for water storage, insulation, etc. In short, a lot has been achieved.
Because the project is of the Youth Service and is part of Antwerp Youth Capital of Europe, it will be implemented with the help of young people (up to 26 years). Hence, we have considered target groups that can contribute to the project.
Ideas are suggested for technical schools to be involved building parts of the earthship as a practical assignment at school. For example, a school where courses are given regarding timber could make the windows at school, or the rafters. This can then later be assembled on site as if it were a kit. This could also be applied for the WOM (Water Organising Module) in training courses for plumbers etc.
Perhaps the project will be split in two phases. A part in April or May 2011, especially with the schools to participate. Part in the summer 2011 to give young people the opportunity to help build an earthship.
Important now is that we have a building plan soon for the office for building permits. For this we are looking for an architect who is prepared to do this unpaid. So, if you are an architect with special interest in earthship, this is your chance to gain experience You can register to volunteer.
Once the building plan is approved by the city of Antwerp we can search for schools that help to realize parts of the project at school. Even dates can then be pinned and plans made to build the tire wall.
We will keep you informed of progress.
